Alto Chiese Nudole: brook trouts, trouts and graylings.

Alto Chiese Nudole: brook trouts, trouts and graylings.

Intro

In this blog I’ll talk about one of the most beautiful areas of Alto Chiese: Nudole. This Trentino locality, in Val Daone, is located some kilometers before Val di Fumo (you can read the related blog and watch the video by clicking here) to be exact at 1500 meters above sea level. In this area you can fish: brook trouts, trouts and graylings. Below you'll find a first paragraph about the morphology and one about fishing, tackle and flies.

Morphology

Nudole area is very beautiful and fascinating, both for the anglers and for those want to spend one or more days in nature walking with family, climbing or simply relaxing. It’s composed in the central part of a natural lake, into which the river Chiese enters and then exits. The water is crystal clear, while the color of the bottom changes according to the spot. In the lake and in the small lateral stream, the bottom tends to be dark, between orange and brown, while in the parts of running water, the white granite bottom is the master. The lake is surrounded by green meadows, while in the running water you enter into the woods. One of the most beautiful points in Nudole area is the waterfall upstream (which marks the upper end of the zone) where the water flows over the rocks and then descends to form the deepest hole in the area. The arrival and access are really very simple, going up the valley you can easily find the parking on the right and previously a camping area on the left. The No-kill zone is 1,3 km.

Fishing, tackle and flies

Fishing in Nudole is managed by the Associazione Pescatori Alto Chiese and normally follows the Val di Fumo season, between June and September, but in this zone also October and the opening can also be anticipated to May in the years in which the snow melts first. This is a perfect area for dry fly fishing, which is also the most profitable technique. The part of the lake is also ideal for wet and streamer fishing, while the river part is obviously also nice for nymph fishing. In this area you can also fish on dry foot but it’s certainly recommended and more comfortable to fish with waders. For the rods and lines you can choose in several ways: either with an all-round rod 8'6", 9' or 9'6" for #3, #4 or #5 line, or with two rods a specific one for the dry and one to be used with both a light streamer and a nymph. Normally in this area with not too deep and crystalline water, especially in the lake, fishing is done on sight or on rising, using long and thin leaders; while in torrential areas it is possible to increase the diameter of the tippet and also shorten its length. Consequently, the flies for this area also deserve a division: artificials for the lake and artificials for the river. In the lake you can use cdc flies such as the Emerger The Usual, the Ephemera Cdc Beige but also small sedge such as the Deer Sedge. In the river, terrestrial and large hunting flies can be used: the Deer Sedge and the Grasshopper are a certainty! Even the Fly Ant and the March Brown must absolutely not be missing in the flies for Nudole. As for the streamers, you can use small marabou streamers or small zonker stramers. In the deeper pools you can nymph fish with the classic Black & White, the Jig Pt., the Pink and the Peeping Caddis to go deep.

Conclusion

It’s an excellent itinerary especially for those approaching fly fishing for the first time, in fact the presence of both the lake and the river, allows you to test and learn the approach in different conditions, both still and fast waters. But of course, even for the most experienced angler it’s certainly a place to spend a nice day in dry fly fishing. It’s also an excellent location to organize group fishing and spent time with the family. There are also specific camping areas to stay comfortably in the area for several days, living an even more wild experience.

Below I leave you with some photos and the video of this beautiful area and its fish.
