Croatia: fly fishing Kupa river and tributaries

Since 2018 I have been visiting Croatia, fly fishing in the Kupa river and its tributaries, the Kupica and Curak.

Traveling from Italy is really comfortable, simple and relatively fast depending on the traffic. Once in the valley, you are immersed in the green of the woods with this river in the middle where the water is so transparent that you can count the stones and the fish on the bottom.

The "River Kupa Lodge" is located right on the river and is logistically convenient for all trips to the other spots.

Fishing in these crystal clear waters especially for grayling, which overwhelmingly dominates these rivers and streams. It can be fished in dry fly, hunting or hatching, and obviously also with nymph. Its presence in all its sizes testifies to the state of health of these environments. In addition to the grayling there are also beautiful brown trout and the most wanted Hucho Hucho.

There is no shortage of hatches, both during the day and during the magical coup de soir.

As for the flies, the top dry flies are: Fly Ant, Ephemera Cdc Beige and March Brown, CDC Emergers, classic Arpo, Stonefly and Sedge.

In those rare moments when there is no activity in top water, we move on to the nymph.

New Zealand technique, a single nymph and indicator in biostrike or Kahuna at 60-80cm and the catches are not lacking. The classic Perdigon Purple always do its great job.

In these rivers at sometimes you can count the grayling on the bottom and watch them as they rise up, amazing. Here it’s wonderful to fly fishing and you are on real waters, without dams, where the levels are still regulated by the rains: if it rains it go up, if it stops raining it decreases. True nature.

Below I leave you with some photos and the video of this experience!

Thanks for reading and see you next time :)
